Dont Forget to Live

The Food of Friendsville MD

Friendsville, MD.  It might not offer a lot, but what it does, it's good at: wedgies and rapids!

Thanks to the abundant rain and snow this year, the rivers are raging!  The quaint and quirky town draws kayakers and rafters from miles away to access the Youghiogheny River.  This year, they can even be found paddling nearby creeks and streams, usually too dry to paddle.  Some have been too dry for years, but it's an epic season.

So what do you eat when you go to Friendsville?  Wedgies. Not painful and embarrassing wedgies, these are edible and tasty!  And what is it?  Well, a fluffy baked pizza-esque crust on top and bottom, lettuce, tomatoes and onions, lb's of deli meat of your choice, and more mayonnaise than you know what to do with.  Served with love.  Sort of.

Wedgie from Friendsville MD

I was born only miles away from Friendsville, and although I never paddled the rivers, I went there often enough to fondly remember these greasy treats.  So I was astonished to discover that most of the US, so I would assume most of the world, has never tasted, seen, or even heard of this type of wedgie!

And where can you get this Appalachian Mountain delicacy?  One place would be the "Funny Farm" Citgo, just off Interstate 68 on  Friendsville Rd, of course.  So next time you're away from home, don't forget to try out the local deli or family owned restaurant.  The locals might have some favorite blood thickening treat to serve up, and if you don't ask to try it, you'll never know.  Enjoy!
